Manual handling is the moving of items either by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling.
The weight of the item is the most important factor. However, other factors can cause injury, for example:
- The number of times you have to pick up or carry an item
- The distance you are carrying it
- Where you are picking it up from or putting it down to
- Any twisting, bending, stretching or other awkward posture you may adopt
Physiotherapists are well able to help you work on the specific strength and mobility issues that lead to you suffering a manual handling injury. We recognise that whilst risk assessment and technique is essential it is not always as practical as it might be. If you are suffering from repeated work-related injury talk to us as we will be able to help you.
